The Bellur Trust

Bellur is a small village in a remote rural area 60 kms from Bangalore in Karnataka, Southern India. The people there lead very poor simple lives but it is now famous as the birthplace of BKS Iyengar. In 2003, BKS Iyengar set up the Bellur Krishnamachar & Seshamma Smaraka Nidhi Trust® (BKSSNT), a charitable body named in memory of his parents known as the Bellur Trust. Its aim is to achieve educational, health, social, and economic reform for the people of Bellur, especially its children.

Since its launch, the Bellur Trust has:

  • Set up a Primary School and a High School, providing free education, books, uniforms and meals
  • Opened a Further Education College for adolescents
  • Installed a storage tank with a capacity of 50000 gallons which supplies regular drinking water to the village
  • Built a small but fully equipped modern hospital with an operating theatre
  • Provided mobile clinics with free treatment for common problems like eye disorders, diabetes and arthritis
  • Restored the thousand year old Rama temple and carvings at Bellur
  • Constructed a hall for yoga practice

BKS Iyengar’s vision for his home village of Bellur has become a reality in an incredibly short time and the villagers now have something to be proud of and the young people have hope for a better future. But there is still lots of work to do!

Your support is greatly appreciated.
